It can prove a good confidence builder having that knowledge & is much more useful than only knowing the 'choke' since much modern ammuniton actually delivers pattern %'s above what the choke marking would indicate, or not. Then you will know exactly what the gun is doing w/that ammunition at the range(s) tested. The best method is to simply spend a bit of time shootng some patterns w/the ammunition you intend to use and at the distances you think are most appropriate to the intended game, be it clay targets or feathered. If you think there is any chance of the chokes not being original then you want to measure them and disregard the choke markings. Some bbls are marked with the 'star' system one star = full choke, two stars = more open, &c. expressed in tenths of a millimeter you may multiply by 4 to get the constriction expressed in 'points' or thousandths of an inch. & the smaller being the constriction or choke dia. There will be two diameters stamped on each bbl.

However I have also seen the markings individually stamped on the bbls.

I've guns with screw ins that sport IC and MOD for the season.Mike, I think the majority of the BL series guns were marked as sweep describes w/both bbl length & chokes printed on the bbl. This would be my choice for an upland gun. You might consider opening the IC to SKEET and open the pattern a bit for those close shoots and keeping the MOD as for the longer shots. IC and MOD have similar effective ranges. The second method of alterations is to have one or both chokes opened. Make sure the tubes or some set of the tubes can handle steel shot. If you looking for an all-rounder that can handle short and long very well then screw ins are the way to go. Question boils down to how much to want to invest and your enjoyment. If you decide to alter the gun, don't expect the value of the gun to increase. Some will pattern tight, light, and just right. Try different loads to see how they pattern. Once you know what you have then you can live with what you have or send it out to be altered. I'm mostly in the leave as it is camp until you've shot and pattern it. The subject of altering chokes can be rather hot topic.
